Our First Year!

Posted on Updated on

We published our first article on May Day 2011. We had no idea whether we’d have anything to say, whether anyone else would be interested in what we have to say or if we’d be able to maintain a blogger lifestyle. One year later, this is our 40th post, we’ve connected with 126 people through Facebook and we have 2,350 unique page views to our site (aiming for 2,500 before May 1.)

Our core values were in that opening post:“We agree that the creative pursuit is a positive life choice and that art has the potential to teach us each something about ourselves through the point of view of another.”

“We value art for the thought, craft and perseverance that it demands above everything else.”

We hope to take the next step in our second year. I’ve been reading a lot about the need for human curation in our over-saturated media environment. Steven Rosenbaum’s Curation Nation uses the metaphor of receiving content from a facet, which the internet has replaced with a fire hose. He advocates for human curation in all aspects of life, from finances to health care and proclaimed earlier this month that Content Curators are the New Superheroes of the Web.

Yesterday, 250 million photos were uploaded to Facebook, 864,000 hours of video were uploaded to YouTube, and 294 BILLION emails were sent. And that’s not counting all the check-ins, friend requests, Yelp reviews and Amazon posts, and pins on Pintrest. – S.Rosenbaum

Rosenbaum calls for individuals willing to filter that firehose of content into something that’s consumable for the rest of us. Others have begun adopting the Curator’s Code, which could renew our value of original thought without stifling creativity. All these things have assured us that there is a place for us on the web and we hope you agree.
