Rachel Smith was born and raised in Bradford, a rural town in Illinois.
She received her BFA in Photography at Illinois State University. Rachel resides in Chicago and currently has a day job as General Manager at Jupiter Outpost, a café in the Fulton Market. In addition to managing the café, Rachel also curates monthly art exhibits while working passionately on her own photography.
Rachel will be showing a selected series from the Sweet Heart Collection. Plastic Cults. The pieces juxtapose the appeal of the New, or the capitalist drive to constantly update and renew, against nostalgia, or unique fashion that can be constructed from something that already exists. She glamorizes the Old as exciting, vibrant, and current in her photographs, the way TV and magazines ads represent the New. When talking about her work, she uses words such as REUSE, REDUCE and RECYCLE as a call out for a re-examination of how we live and spend our time and resources.
Rachel’s Work will be on display at Morton College from . Building C, Second floor across from the Student Union.
