Soundtrack for a Revolution

Posted on Updated on

We had the honor of seeing Soundtrack for a Revolution at the University Film and Video Association Conference a few summers ago. I’d never seen Dr. Martin Luther King portrayed as anything but a stoic, fearless leader until Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman exposed me to his vulnerable side in a way that I never understood before. I thought it would it would be appropriate to share this doc as we’ve recently heard news that they are changing the quote at Dr. King’s memorial. I’m happy to learn that a more nuanced portrayal will be kept for future generations.

Using interviews, archival material and performances from The Roots, John Legend and TV on the Radio, the film taps into the essence of the civil rights movement. Stream it on Netflix tonight to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day.
